Event Details

The International Open Data Hackathon is taking place across the globe on 3 Dec 2011.  As part of this, the GIST Foundation is hosting a hands-on hack weekend (3-4 Dec) to play, experiment and build cool stuff with public data.

We're inviting designers, developers and citizens to come together to mash up ideas, creating prototypes and building apps that take advantage of some of the growing sources of open and linked data that are publicly available.

You don't need to have technical skills to get involved. Ideas people, project wranglers, app testers are also warmly invited to come along and get stuck in.

You can come with or without ideas. You'll find inspiration and collaborators on the day, as well as have the opportunity to be part of the Sheffield City App open data mobile project.

With mentoring support from Open Data Sheffield and the Sheffield Mobile Developer Community, the goal is to create open data driven mobile app prototypes by the end of the weekend.

There are also some limited places to join the teams for a show'n'tell at the end of the day, and see how some of the imagineering has gone.

The GIST Foundation City Apps project  is made possible with the generous support of Nokia, who offer mobile developers tools and SDKs to aid their work at forum.nokia.com. This is the last of three planned mobile developer sessions in a collaboration between Sheffield Mobile Developer Group and Open Data Sheffield

Sheffield Mobile Developer Group is a project-driven meetup for folks from across the region who are practising or learning the art of programming for mobile devices across platforms including iPhone/iPad, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, as well as using HTML 5 to develop mobile apps.

Open Data Sheffield (@opensheffieldis a community of local authority staff, active citizens, geeks, academics, journalists and public data providers collaborating to increase public sector transparency in the region and make it easier for citizens to understand the decisions and services that affect them.

It is an initiative of the GIST Foundation, a non-profit organisation that champions grassroots technology and social innovation in South Yorkshire.

This edition of Open Data Sheffield and the Sheffield Mobile Developer group is presented as part of the GIST Craft of Development Festival.
